Question: My boyfriend sometimes insists on sex even though I’m on my period. I don’t want to disappoint him but it could certainly get messy. What advice would you give for this situation?

Answer: It is always a good idea to hold on until after your heaviest days. When you engage in sex, make it a habit to cover the surface with a towel and keep wet wipes handy so you guys can do a quick cleanup. During sexual intercourse, adopt the conventional man-on-top posture for the simple reason that when you are lying down, your menstrual secretions could be a lot less than when you are upright. If you are not keen on this position or you are the type who is more adventurous in your sexual endeavors, you can mount a diaphragm, cervical cap or menstrual cup (this is a variation to tampons and pads and not meant for contraception; you should be able to get your hands on it from local pharmacists or online drug stores) before you start to experiment with different positions.
